In today’s digital era, our children are spending more and more time on their devices both in and out of school and becoming neglectful of other important life skills – the ones that relate to human interaction. Let’s take a look at the essential skills for young learners that we as teachers and parents need to develop and nurture.
Creativity
The power of creativity is undeniable, especially in this fast-changing world. Creativity helps improve self-esteem and motivates students. Those who are encouraged to think creatively are more open to new ideas and challenges, can work well with others, better problem solvers, and more interested in discovering new ideas for themselves.
Communication
At all levels of education, students must be able to communicate effectively. Effective communication skills play a major role in matching the pace of the world’s development and are essential for the successful future career of a student.
Collaboration
This means being able to work in groups that are both physical and virtual. It includes proficiency in communication, empathy, and leadership values. It also means the ability to work with someone across the world as easily and productively as someone across the room.
Critical Thinking
As teachers and parents, we don’t want the children to do their work well only when they’re in the classroom. We want them to be able to think critically. Critical thinking is not limited to a specific subject but it is the capacity of a student to think in a more rational and clear way. Critical thinking is important for students as it gives them the ability to think in the right way and solve problems in a more efficient and methodical way.
In books like Cool Kids, those skills are included alongside linguistic ones, with tasks and activities designed to support them. Read more about Cool Kids here: https://www.dtp-education.com/…/cool-kids-second-edition/
